Chapter 8: Swan Point
Rocco's POV
I went to Swan Point at seven in the morning, before the groundskeepers, and stood at my brother's stone with my hat in my hands.
I had not done that in a month.
It had rained in the night, and the grass was dark and the stone was wet.
DARIO SALVATORE FERRANTE, it said, and two dates, and under them the line our grandmother had chosen: He laughed first.
I said, "I put a girl in the house."
The wind moved in the maples.
"She's Toby's daughter," I said.
"You'd like her.
"She picked up a pot of boiling water in front of Vincent.
"I think she'd have used it."
I waited, and nothing answered, which was the usual answer.
I had taken a woman off a dock because I could not take the man.
I had known it was wrong on the dock.
I had done it anyway, because eight months of nothing had worn a groove in me, and a groove is a place for something to run.
Dario would have told me what I was.
He would have said it with a grin and a hand on the back of my neck, and I would have wanted to hit him.
I put my hat on.
On my way out I stopped at the gatehouse, where the old caretaker kept his books, and asked him a question I should have asked in March.
"The night my brother was found," I said.
"Do you remember anything about the road?"
"Not the Cranston road," the caretaker said.
"I live out past there.
"I drive it every night.
"The night he was killed, I came down it at ten and again at midnight.
"There was no car on it at ten, boss.
"And at midnight there were two."
"Two?"
"His, and a gray sedan pulled in behind, the kind a man drives who wants no one to look at him twice.
"That's what I told the police.
"The young detective wrote it down.
