Chapter 24: Beer
Amber's POV
The Dependable truck backed up to the townhouse door at eight on Saturday morning, beeping the whole way.
Tavon climbed down from the cab with his clipboard and his cap on backward.
"Good morning, ma'am," he said. "I'll have you in Chattanooga by dinner or you get a free sandwich."
"You said that the first time."
"And I delivered. You got a whole husband," Tavon said.
"Fiancé."
"I'm rounding up."
Darius came out behind me with a roll of tape in his hand.
He was not on the clock.
He had put in for the day off two weeks ago.
He stood on the walkway in his own jeans and a plain gray shirt, looking at the truck.
"You can't carry anything," Tavon told him. "You're a civilian."
"I'll carry the couch."
"You're not allowed to touch the couch. It's company policy," Tavon said.
"I'm family."
"Then you hold the door."
Darius held the door.
He held it for ten minutes.
Then Tavon went in for a box and Darius followed him to take the other end, and Tavon pretended not to notice.
I stood in my emptied kitchen with the stand mixer on the counter, and I made a pound cake.
I had decided on Wednesday.
It was ridiculous to bake on moving day.
I did it anyway, creaming the butter in the white bowl until it went pale, and then the sugar, one egg at a time.
The kitchen smelled like vanilla and the oven ticking up.
Two men who had carried my whole life out of one house came in for a drink of water.
They stopped in their tracks.
"What's that?" Tavon said.
"Lemon pound cake."
"Who's it for?" Tavon said.
"The crew."
He looked at the mixer, and at the bowl, and at me.
He had been there on the first day when a man in a quarter-zip told me nobody was ever going to bake for me again.
"Oh, I'm going to need a fork," Tavon said, and his voice was not quite steady.
