Chapter 7: The Mail
Randall rang the bell at noon on Saturday, and I opened the door with a curtain rod in my hand.
He stood on the walkway holding a cardboard box with MAIL written on the side in his neat block capitals.
"I was in the neighborhood," he said.
"No, you weren't."
"I was in the neighborhood of your forwarding address." He smiled. "You never filed it with the post office. Some of this is important."
He held the box out, and I did not take it.
Behind me in the hall, a floorboard creaked.
Darius had come out of the kitchen with a screwdriver in his hand and a bedroom curtain over one arm.
He stopped when he saw who it was.
Randall looked past me and up, and then up some more.
The smile stayed exactly where it was.
"Oh," he said. "It's the mover."
"Randall," I said.
"No, that's great. That's really great. How long has this been going on?"
