Chapter 12: The Offer

I read it standing up in the kitchen.

Then I sat down at the table and did the math on a napkin.

Blake's Kestrel shares were worth about three hundred million dollars.

Under the prenup, they were his alone.

Under the fidelity clause, the one I'd typed with Rosie not even an idea yet, cheating made them marital property.

Half was a hundred and fifty million.

He was offering me five.

I called Vivian.

"He's buying the clause," I said.

"At three cents on the dollar." I heard her shoes come off. "It's also a good offer, Margot. Custody, money, done by summer. Plenty of women would sign it Monday morning and sleep for the first time in a year."

"Would you?"

"I'm not those women. Neither are you. But I have to tell you it exists." She paused. "What do you want?"

I looked at the baby monitor on the counter.

The green light was still on. I'd never moved it.

"I want to say no in person," I said. "In his lawyer's office. With him in the room."

Vivian laughed, a short real one.

"Monday," she said. "Ten. Wear the blazer."

The twins' mom took Rosie at eight-thirty.

"If it goes badly, text me a skull," she said. "If it goes well, text me a cake. If it goes medium, I don't want to know."

Blake's lawyer had an office on University Avenue, two blocks from my old firm.

The conference room had a long glass table and a view of the hills and a bowl of green apples nobody ate.

Blake was already there.

He'd dressed down for it, a gray quarter-zip and his good watch.

His lawyer sat beside him with silver hair and cufflinks shaped like little anchors.

Two young associates sat at the far end of the table with legal pads.
