Chapter 21: The Steps of the Truck

Harper looked at the porch rail.

Then she looked at me.

"Did you read it?"

"It lit up," I said. "I have eyes."

She came up the steps two at a time and snatched the phone off the rail.

She held it against her coat with both hands.

"He's just stressed," she said. "He says things."

"He told you to cry."

"I know what he told me."

"Then you know what he thinks of you." I kept the chain on the door. "Good night, Harper."

She stood there one more second.

Then she went back to her car.

This time she didn't forget anything.

I closed the door and leaned on it.

I called Cliff before I could decide not to.

"It's ten-forty," he said when he picked up. "Either somebody's dead or you found something."

"Both, kind of. Can you come over? Rosie's asleep. I can't leave."

"Twenty minutes."

He came in fifteen.

He didn't bring his car.

He brought the truck, and parked it at my curb under the streetlight, a big green box with NEWBERRY'S on the side.

"My car's in the shop," he said. "Your neighbor's going to love this."

Across the street, the porch light came on again.

"She already does," I said.

We didn't go inside.

He opened the truck's back door, and we sat on the two metal steps with the monitor app open on my phone between us.

On the little screen, Rosie slept with her arms flung over her head.

I showed him the photo of Harper's lock screen.

He read it twice.
