Chapter 22: The Wall

Nobody moved.

Rosie lifted her head off the rug, wobbled, and dropped her face back into it with a squawk.

Blake took a step into the room.

"Margot. Now, please. I've got a call at eleven."

I didn't get up.

I put one hand flat on Rosie's back.

"It's Tuesday," I said. "Your weekends start Friday at five. At the front door. The judge read it out loud. You were there."

"I'm her father. I don't need an appointment."

"You do. It's called an order."

He laughed and looked around the circle, inviting everyone in on the joke.

"You see what I deal with?"

Nobody laughed with him.

The midwife stood up.

She was a head shorter than him and had been delivering babies since before he was born.

"Sir," she said pleasantly. "This is a closed group. Parents and babies only."

"I'm a parent."

"You're a parent who's not on the sign-up sheet." She held it up. "We have rules. Name, baby's name, how many hours you slept. Go."

Blake stared at her.

"Excuse me?"

"Name," said the midwife. "Baby's name. Hours."

"I'm not doing that."

"Then you're not in the group."

The chemistry teacher stood up next.

He had his baby in the sling and a cookie in one hand.
