Chapter 26: The Launch
I looked at the poster for a long time.
Rosie was asleep upstairs in the real version of that onesie, outgrown now and too short in the legs.
I typed one line into the group chat.
"Two o'clock. Who's free?"
The answers came in faster than they ever had for a playdate.
"Me." "Me." "Me, I'll be late." "I'll bring the Professor."
"Not a professor," the chemistry teacher wrote.
"Nobody asked," wrote the twins' mom.
Then the midwife, who never used the chat.
"I'll drive."
On Saturday at one-thirty Cliff took Rosie at my front door.
He had the car seat from the truck, a bag of teething rings and a face.
"Two hours," I said. "Maybe three."
"She and I are going to the park to look at a duck."
"She loves ducks."
"I know. I've been briefed." He put his hand on my arm. "Go get your picture back."
The boutique on University Avenue was all white shelves and cream linen and dried pampas grass in tall vases.
There was a little stage at the back with a microphone.
There were about sixty people with plastic cups of rosé.
There were three photographers.
And on an easel beside the stage was the poster, four feet tall.
My daughter, asleep, with her fist against her cheek.

We came in all together.
The midwife first.
Then the twins' mom with her double stroller, the chemistry teacher with his sling, and the young mom, who was only two minutes late and very proud of it.
