Chapter 6: What He Signed
That night Dermot laid his laptop on my mother's kitchen table and turned the screen toward me.
It showed an invoice from a jeweler in the city, with six pendants and one charm on it, and a signature at the bottom.
It was his.
"I signed that on a Tuesday between two meetings," he said. "Dorian put it on top of a stack."
"You signed it without reading it."
"Yes."
"Like you signed the company's books after I left."
He went very still.
I had been holding it in since the car, and it came out of me in a rush.
"Three years ago I told you Dorian was moving money out of the family trust. I told you, in the pool house, before we ever, before anything. You said you'd look."
"I did look."
"And then you signed the audit that cleared him."
"Susannah."
"You signed it, Dermot. I saw the cover page when I went back to the office for my things. It had your name on it."
"I know what it had on it."
"Then say why."
He closed the laptop.
"Because I was shown numbers that matched," he said. "I'm not going to stand here and tell you more than I can prove."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the one I have."
I got up and stood at the counter with my back to him.
My hands were shaking, and I wanted a cup of tea so I would have something to hold.
The cupboard over the stove was too high, and I dragged a chair across the floor, stepped up, and reached for the tin on the top shelf.
The chair rocked.
I grabbed the shelf, and the tin came down and rang off the stove.
