Chapter 11: Day Ten
On Monday I wore a silk scarf wrapped twice around my neck and tied under my ear.
In the garage mirror I looked like exactly what I was, a woman hiding something.
It was the tenth business day.
I had not forgotten.
I had known since Friday that it was day ten, and that Policy 4.2 gave us until the end of it.
I had told myself all weekend that I would deal with it on Monday morning.
On Monday morning I had a bruise the size of a quarter on the side of my neck.
At 9:55 the HR generalist came out of her office with a clipboard.
She was in her forties, trim, with reading glasses on a cord, and she walked the aisles of the west wing slowly.
She stopped at my desk.
The whole row could see her.
Claims was an open floor of low gray walls, and every head within thirty feet turned a quarter inch.
"Good morning, Renee," she said.
"Good morning."
"We received a security notice this morning." Her voice was pleasant and flat. "Do you have anything you'd like to tell me?"
