Chapter 21: Coat Check

The HR generalist knocked twice on the glass.

"Ms. Vavra," she said through the door, in her pleasant flat voice. "This folder is out of order. Please see that it gets back in the cabinet."

I looked at Kyle.

Kyle looked at the ceiling with his mouth shut.

"Yes," I said. "Thank you."

Her shoes went away down the corridor, at her usual pace.

She never mentioned it, then or later.

The company holiday party was on the second Friday of December, on the top floor of a restaurant in the Old Market.

It had brick walls and a six-piece band playing Sinatra.

I wore a black dress with a neckline that left the bite below my ear in plain view.

Kyle wore a dark suit and a white shirt with the collar open.

The whole company could see what I'd put on his throat.

Nobody said a word.

Dawn came across the floor in a green dress with her husband behind her.

She looked at the two of us standing side by side and put a hand on her heart.

"Look at you," she said. "The both of you. Look."

"Don't," I said.

"I'm just looking."

"You're crying," I said.

"I'm not crying. It's the lights."

The vice president of claims climbed onto a chair with a glass of champagne, which he did at every event.

He tapped the glass with a fork.
