Chapter 20: Forty Years at the Window
I saluted him back.
I was naked in my own window with a man's mark under my jaw.
I put two fingers to my forehead and sent it straight across the street.
The old man nodded once, and went inside.
On Sunday morning he knocked on my front door.
I opened it in my robe with a piece of toast in my hand.
He stood on the mat in his cardigan, holding a worn leather case in both hands.
"Good morning," he said. "I won't come in."
"Come in. I have coffee."
"I won't. I've said what I came to say, nearly." He took a breath. "I'm not a peeper, Lena."
"I know that."
"I want it understood," he said. "Forty years in that window, and I've watched this court have its weddings and its fights and its funerals."
"I never once looked where I shouldn't."
"I believe you," I said.
"Yesterday I looked."
"I know you did."
"It was the first time since my wife passed that I thought a window was worth looking at," he said.
