Chapter 23: The Gate
Nobody pulled a blind that night, or the next, or any night that week.
On Sunday the twenty-eighth, Tyler showed up at the back of my yard at nine in the morning.
He had a drill, a level, a bundle of cedar boards on his shoulder and a paper bag of hinges.
I came out on my deck in a tank top and shorts, with my coffee.
"What is this?" I said.
"A gate."
"For what?"
"For the gap." He pointed with the drill. "You climb the fence, I vault it. We're two adults with a corner of nothing between our decks."
"I'm an electrician, not a carpenter," he said. "But a gate is just a door that doesn't have a house."
"That's not what an electrician says."
"It's what this one says."
He set the boards on the grass and started laying them out, and I sat on the edge of my deck to watch.
It was already warm, with the smell of cut cedar and the buzz of a mower somewhere down the court.
He measured twice, and wrote numbers on a board in pencil, and put the pencil behind his ear.
I thought he had no idea how he looked, in a gray T-shirt gone dark at the neck, with sawdust on his forearms and the scar showing.
He drove a screw into the first brace.
