Chapter 10: Thirty Days

Hargrove Capital had the whole nineteenth floor of a glass tower on Wisconsin Avenue, and the boardroom had a wall of windows over the lake.

At nine on Monday there were fourteen people at the long table.

I knew eight of them.

Two partners, four analysts, the office manager, and the general counsel who had drawn up my "investment" three years ago.

Dalton sat at the head in a navy suit, with a coffee and a smile.

His smile stopped when I walked in on Marguerite's arm.

"Mother," he said. "Cora. This is a staff meeting."

"We know," said Marguerite. "We were invited."

"By whom?"

"By the firm's largest outstanding creditor." She took a chair, and she nodded to me. "Go on, my dear."

I put the portfolio on the table and opened it.

My hands were cold, and my voice came out steady.

"Three years ago I lent this firm three hundred and eighty thousand dollars," I said. "It's in writing, signed by Dalton Hargrove and witnessed by his mother. It's repayable on demand, with eight percent interest."

I slid the paper down the table.

The general counsel picked it up and read it.

His face went slack.

"I'm calling it in," I said. "Today."

"That is not the document in our file," said Dalton.

"I know. Yours says gift."

"This is a private matter between husband and wife."

"It's a loan, Dalton, between a firm and a lender." I looked at the staff, who were pretending to study their coffee. "I'd like to be paid. All of you work here. You can read."

One of the partners cleared his throat.

"Dalton, do we have the liquidity?"

"It's a distraction. Cora is unwell, and her lawyer has not even filed."
