Chapter 18: The Nameboard
I stood at the counter with my hand flat on the gold letters.
I'd last seen this board at the Lower Wharf auction, the summer I was seventeen, going onto a flatbed with the rest of her.
"Bin forty," Mavis said quietly. "Out of how many, do you think?"
I lay on the cot with the nameboard propped against the dory crib where I could see it.
At four in the morning I got up and texted the older twin.
Can you drive me to Fall River?
His reply came right away: When?
On New Year's Eve the twins drove me up the coast in their mother's pickup.
Zeke's father lived in a narrow gray house on the river below the big bridge, with a dock out back.
The twins stayed in the truck.
"We'll be right here," said the older one. "If he's a jerk, honk twice."
A small bent man in a knit cap opened the door.
"He's on the dock," he said. "Been out there since Christmas."
Zeke was sitting on the end of the dock with his back to me, in a canvas jacket, looking at the water.
