Chapter 26: The Table
For a second I thought he'd hit me.
His hand came up.
Then the cameras were on us, and he remembered them, and he turned it into straightening his tie.
His lawyers got him into the elevator.
I sat back down on the bench, because my legs had decided to.
Zeke was beside me before I saw him move.
"They're going to fire me," he said quietly. "I said all of it."
"I know."
"Worth it."
The state indicted Orson for the harbor fire the next morning.
They arrested him at the Alderwyn gate, beside the cruiser that had been guarding him.
The same afternoon, Hesketh's grandson called me.
He sounded happy.
"Grandfather opened the book," he said. "Tomorrow night. Seven o'clock. He says bring yourself."
He hung up.
I sat on the cot in the back room with the phone in my hand for a long time.
Then I went and found the twins.
At ten that night I let myself into the yacht club with my key.
Sixty years in that safe, and the loan book fit in a waxed fish box from the co-op.
On the fifth of March I carried it into the back room at seven o'clock.
