Chapter 32: The Blessing
"Which boat?" I said.
The co-op president turned his cap around one more time.
"Yours," he said. "If she's ready."
She was ready.
I'd bought her in April, the week the state indicted Hesketh.
I paid for her with every dollar I had and a loan from Mavis.
"At zero percent," Mavis had said, writing it on an order pad. "Payable never. Sign here."
The twins and Zeke had spent May rebuilding her engine on the Lower Wharf, three nights a week, with the co-op president standing over them telling them they were doing it wrong.
They'd painted her dark green.
On the Saturday before the Blessing, the older twin screwed the nameboard back onto her stern with four new brass bolts.

On Sunday morning the harbor was so full of boats you could have walked across it.
A hundred and forty families.
The whole island was on the pier.
The priest stood at the end of it in his white robes with a silver bucket of holy water, squinting into the sun.
And beside him stood a long folding table from the diner, with a cardboard box on it.
