Chapter 10: The Quiet Is Loud

On Sunday afternoon I read chapter ten aloud to him in the office, standing up, with my pages in my hand.

Knox sat at the long table with his arms folded and his eyes closed.

It was how he listened.

I had thought it was strange the first day, and by the fifth I had stopped noticing.

"Nell stood at the top of the stairs with the lamp," I read. "And she understood that her father had never lied to her."

"He had only stopped saying the true thing."

I stopped.

"That's good," Knox said, with his eyes still shut. "Keep that."

"I haven't written the next part."

"You know it, though."

"I know what she says."

"Then say it." He tilted his head toward the window.

"She wants to call it a lie and she can't. What does she say?"

I looked at the page.

I felt the sentence I needed come up from somewhere low.

I could not find the first word.

"Nell says," I began, and stalled.

"The lie is only loud when you stop trusting the quiet," Knox said.

His voice was low and flat and easy.

"Trust the quiet."

The office went silent.

I stood very still, with the pages in my hand.

I knew that sentence.

I knew it the way I knew my mother's phone number.

I had it in my coat pocket, folded in four, soft at the creases from two years of my thumb.

It was written in blue capitals in the margin of chapter three, next to a paragraph about my own mother.

It was the first time anyone had ever told me my writing was true.
