Chapter 22: The Bakery
I read the lease twice at the long table.
The rent was three times what the agent had quoted.
There was a clause on page six I had to read with Tamara on speakerphone.
"Tenant agrees to vote her Steady shares in line with Landlord's recommendations for the term of the lease," Tamara read.
"Oh, that's adorable. He wants to be Derek."
"Can he do that?"
"He can ask. You can laugh."
"I don't want to laugh," I said. "I want the building."
The fleece vest met me at the storefront on a Tuesday in mid-February.
He was in a fleece vest. Of course he was.
He stood in the empty room with his hands in his pockets, looking pleased with himself.
I'd brought the crew.
They'd come to measure. That was what I'd told him.
Fourteen people in coveralls walked through the front door behind me with tape measures and clipboards.
They spread out through the room and started measuring very loudly.
He looked less pleased.
"I don't need a speech, Ms. Caffrey," he said. "Sign or don't."
"I don't want to rent it."
