Chapter 20: Her Name Back
Dean came for the clinic on a Wednesday morning, with two movers and a man in a suit.
I know because I was standing in Freja's waiting room with a coffee, since she had a heifer on the table and had asked me to hold the door.
The black truck pulled up outside.
Through the front window I watched it park across two spaces.
"Here we go," Freja said from the back, over a very annoyed cow.
Dean walked in with a paper in his hand.
"Freja. I've come for my half."
"Hello, Dean."
"Marital property. The clinic, the house, the equipment, the truck."
He nodded to the movers.
They stood behind him with their hands in their pockets, looking like they'd rather be anywhere else.
"I see you brought a notary," Freja said.
The man in the suit looked down at his shoes.
He was hired by the hour, and he was clearly ashamed of it.
Freja came out from the back, peeling a long blue glove off her arm.
She wasn't angry anymore.
I saw that, and it scared me a little.
"The clinic was my father's," she said. "He left it to me, in his will, before I ever met you. It's in my name only."
"We improved it together."
"With what? You never worked a day in it."
"I paid for the new X-ray."
"With money from the school retreat fund," Freja said. "Which the county prosecutor has asked me to bring in on Friday."
Dean's jaw went tight.
"The house, then."
"The house is in both our names, and I'm filing to sell it. When the sale goes through, I'll split what's left with you, minus the part you owe the district."
