Chapter 6: The Diner

"You sent it?" I said.

"From a library computer, with a fake email, like a guy in a movie." He pushed his glasses back down onto his nose. "I sent it to the chair's office. I figured some old man's secretary would shred it."

"The old man died in April."

"I know. I'm sorry. I sent it anyway." He shrugged. "I didn't think the new chair would read it. I definitely didn't think she'd quote it in front of the entire freshman class."

"I didn't quote it."

"You froze every contract it listed. That's quoting with your hands."

Maddie was looking back and forth between us.

"Okay," she said. "I'm going to go to bed and lie there not sleeping. You two can be cryptic without me."

"Lock your door," the law student said.

"I always lock my door. I live in north-quad. There's a raccoon."

She left.

The law student held out his hand.

"Will Danforth," he said.

"Georgia Carlisle."

"I know. You were very loud about it."

His hand was warm and rough across the palm.

"Are you hungry?" he said. "There's a diner by the highway that's open all night. I think better with pancakes."

"It's three in the morning."

"That's when the pancakes are best. Nobody else is eating them."

The diner had red vinyl booths and a waitress who called us both honey.

Will ordered a stack of six without looking at the menu.

I ordered coffee and then stole his pancakes, one forkful at a time, while he pretended not to notice.

"So," he said. "Why are you really living in north-quad?"

"Why do you think?"

"I think you're either very principled or very stubborn."

"Those are the same thing."

"Not in my experience. My experience is that principled people have better parking." He pushed the syrup toward me. "Why'd you take the chair? You're twenty-four. You could have sold the seat to the Sternes and moved back to Paris."
