Chapter 15: The Other Creditors
The board meeting ended with the retired banker calling a recess.
Judson's lawyer took him out by the elbow, and Judson did not look back.
Mavis squeezed my hand in the parking lot and said, "Go feed your vendors."
I had called them that morning, one by one.
I told each of them the same thing: a table, a booth, an hour, my treat.
The diner on Oakland Avenue had red vinyl seats and a pie case, and the corner booth was empty at six.
I took the side facing the door.
The fuel company's owner came first, a woman my own age in a quilted vest.
She had a roll of invoices in her fist.
The tire dealer came second, a lanky man in a cap with grease under his nails.
The warehouse landlord came last, an older man in a golf jacket.
He sat on the very edge of the bench.
"I'm Ella Tennant," I said.
"We know who you are," said the landlord. "You're the one in the newspaper."
"I am."
"With the wine on you."
"Yes."
"Judson says you're not well," said the tire dealer.
