Chapter 16: The Offer
Dear Lark,
My boss offered me a promotion and a raise in writing. I did nothing to earn it except stand near the wrong person. Should I say yes before he changes his mind?

The offer letter said forty percent more, a byline above the fold, and my name in the masthead as "Columnist."
It said the column would continue under the name Lark, which "remains the property of the company."
Under the fold it said I would "voice" the column with guidance from the sponsor team.
I read it at my desk, twice, and then I read the last sentence once more.
"This offer expires Friday at noon."
Gordon wanted an answer by Friday.
He got it Thursday, at the all-hands, in front of everyone.
The meeting was already unpleasant by the time I walked in.
Marguerite sat at the far end of the long table in her gray coat, not looking at anything.
Her hand lay flat on a folder.
Robin had saved me a seat and slid a donut at me without speaking.
Gordon stood up at the head, glowing, in a fresh blue blazer.
"Before we start, a bit of good news," he said.
"We have been looking for a fresh voice for the column, and I'm delighted to say we have found one in our own building."
Thirty heads turned.
I put my donut down.
"Hallie Park has a gift for the honest, human, relatable thing," Gordon said.
"I've offered her the column."
"A raise, a title, a byline."
"She's earned a bit of recognition."
Somebody near the back actually started to clap.
