Chapter 10: The Vote

At ten on Friday morning I walked into the Reeve Harbor boardroom for the first time in my life.

Twelve directors sat around a long glass table.

Dalton sat at the head of it, in the chair my father's partner had once sat in.

The seat on his right had been left empty for the chair of the board.

The seat on his left had a folded name card with my name on it.

Mrs. Reeve, Shareholder.

He had put it there himself, to make me small.

I picked up the card, tore it in half and dropped it into the wastebasket.

Then I took the empty chair at the opposite end of the table, and Ansel sat down beside me.

The directors looked from me to Dalton and back again.

"Emme," Dalton said, kindly. "You really shouldn't be here."

"I called this meeting," I said. "A holder of fifty-one percent can call one with an hour's notice. Page four of the bylaws."

The chair of the board, a white-haired woman with reading glasses on a chain, looked at the lawyer beside me.

My lawyer slid a stapled copy of the transfer records to her.

The chair read it for a full minute.

"It's valid," she said.

A director near the middle of the table coughed.

"I move," I said, "to remove Dalton Reeve as chief executive officer, effective today."

Nobody moved.

Then a man at the far end whispered, "Jesus," and the room came back to life.

Dalton stood.

He buttoned his jacket slowly.

"Directors," he said, in the warm voice from the ballroom. "I want to apologize for this scene. My wife is the subject of a court petition. She has been medically evaluated. The court will rule on Monday whether she is fit to manage her own affairs."
