Chapter 18: Sisters

I kept my eyes on the page so she wouldn't see them.

I turned to the front, then the back.

The first entry was dated a week before Easter, and the ink was the same blue on every page, months of it, without a single smudge.

Nobody writes a diary for three months with one pen.

"I know," my mother said softly. "I couldn't believe it either. She's dragged you into her fantasy."

I closed the clasp.

"I'll take it in today," I said.

"That's my brave girl."

She paid for the tea.

She kissed my cheek on the way out, and the gardenia stayed on my skin after she'd gone.

I scrubbed it off in the café bathroom until my cheek was pink.

Then I took out my phone and texted my sister for the first time in this life.

"The company dock. Six o'clock. Alone. It's about Mom."

The answer came in under a minute.

"lol. ok."

The Haverhill Marine dock ran out from the back of the old boat shed into the harbor.

At six on a Friday it was empty.

The yard crews had gone home, the travel lift stood still over its slip, and the water slapped against the pilings.
