Chapter 15: Two Chairs
Briana asked me to walk with her before dinner, and I said yes.
Judd was in the doorway of the bar with a bottle brush in his hand, and he shook his head once.
I shook mine back.
We had talked it through in the hall, with Oliver and the whole inn pretending to dust.
She wants me where she can see me, I had said.
So let her see me.
Briana took my arm on the path down to the shingle, and I let her.
Her cardigan smelled like our mother's house.
"I owe you the biggest apology of my life," she said.
"You do."
"I went to the grave to burn the print. I couldn't do it." She stopped at the edge of the water. "I've been carrying it so long, Dani. I thought if it was gone, it would stop being true."
She had never lied to me with tears in her eyes before.
I knew, because I had never needed to check.
Now I watched her face and weighed every word.
"What does it say?" I asked.
"The photo?"
"Mine. You've seen the front."
She hesitated for exactly as long as it took to decide.
"It's you," she said. "Sitting at the table, in a white dress. I couldn't tell you. You'd have seen it every time you closed your eyes."
"And the man?"
"He's reaching for you." Her mouth trembled. "I don't know why. I used to think it was to save you, and then I thought it might be the opposite."
I made myself take her hand.
"What should I do?"
"Let me sit with you," Briana said. "On the ninth. Let me be at the table. If it comes, it comes for both of us."
