Chapter 18: The Critique
The gray case was empty when Wilder opened it on Friday morning.
Dash saw it from across the Fenn Hall basement, where he had come to carry canvases.
Wilder stood at the locker with the little lid open in his hand.
He turned it over, shook it, and looked inside again.
"Wilder," Dash said, stepping close enough that his face was clear.
"They're gone."
"The aids?"
"I put them in the case at nine last night. I put the case in the locker." Wilder's voice was too loud and very controlled. "I locked it myself."
"Who has a key?"
"The department. And whoever picks a lock."
Dash looked at the locker door.
The little brass hasp was scratched by the point of a knife.
"I'm going to find them," he said.
"Not before ten."
"What's at ten?"
"My critique," Wilder said.
He shut the case and slid it into his pocket.
His hand was shaking, and he put it flat against his leg until it stopped.
Pru arrived at a run, took one look at his face, and signed something so fast that Dash could not follow a single word.
