Chapter 24: In Public
The gallery on Newbury Street opened on the second Saturday in May, and Dash arrived forty minutes early because he could not stand still.
It was a long white room with high windows and a floor of pale boards.
Eleven of Wilder's paintings hung on the walls.
At the far end, nine feet wide and lit from the left, hung the mouth.
SAY IT, said the small card beside it.
Not for sale.
"You've been standing in front of that for ten minutes," Rory said.
He handed him a plastic cup of something fizzy.
"Everyone else is staring at the cheese."
"I'm allowed," Dash said.
"You're blocking the cheese."
Dash moved six inches to the left.
Behind him the room was filling.
Professors, students, three people from the Boston papers, a man in a purple scarf who had already asked the price of everything.
Pru stood by the door in a black jacket with her pins.
She was signing to half a dozen Deaf guests who had come in from the club.
Dexter Haverford had arrived in a suit that did not fit, with the black dog on a lead.
He stood in front of a small canvas of the Gloucester harbor with his arms crossed and a look of fierce, tender suspicion.
