Chapter 19: What the Fall Was
Pil-gu walked Jae-ryeong out among the pines behind the camp, where the snow lay thick and no one could hear.
Two of his guards followed at a distance and stopped under a tree.
Pil-gu clasped his hands behind his back.
"Here is the offer, Nephew," he said.
"Tomorrow you will stand up and say the Frost deluded you."
"You will give the boy back to Master Mo."
"You will put the seal in my hands, in trust, for as long as your health requires."
"You will go home to the pine garden, and you will be cared for."
"Cared for."
"Like a gentleman. Like your father, in his last years."
Jae-ryeong looked at him.
"My father died in a fall."
"So he did."
"On the cliff stair."
"A terrible accident." Pil-gu sighed. "He would not listen to anyone."
"I made him the same offer, you know. At the top of the east stair, on a wet night in the summer."
"He was always proud, your father. He was proud right up to the second step."
The snow was very quiet.
Jae-ryeong heard the pines creak, and a long way off a horse stamping.
He heard his own breath.
"What did you say?" he said.
"I said he would not listen."
"You said the second step."
"Did I?"
Pil-gu smiled.
It was a kind smile.
It was the smile he had worn when Jae-ryeong was seven, handing him a sweet.
"I am an old man, Nephew. I say all sorts of things."
