Chapter 10: Hot Tub

Joelle's POV

By Thursday night the first rule was dead, and nobody had held a funeral.

I texted him at nine: Hot tub. Gate's unlocked.

He texted back: On my way.

It was still 98 degrees on the patio.

I had turned the heater up to 104 anyway, because I wanted steam, and because I wanted to see what it did to him.

I sat in the tub in the dark with the jets off.

The underwater light was on its dimmest setting, a wash of blue that barely reached my collarbone.

The steam came off the water and hung in the air between the pergola posts.

He came around the corner of the house at 9:20, in the work shorts and a clean T-shirt.

He stopped at the edge of the light.

"You're naked," he said.

"It's a hot tub."

"I know it's a hot tub," he said.

"Then get in it," I said.

He took off the T-shirt and the shorts and left them on a chair.

He climbed in slowly, wincing at the heat.

He sank onto the bench across from me with his knees apart and the water up to his ribs.

I watched the steam run down his chest.

His curls were damp already, and the Virgen medal glinted at his throat.

"Come here," I said.

"It's hot."

"I didn't ask if it was hot."

He crossed the tub to me.

I moved to the wide bench seat on the far side and spread my knees.

He knelt up between them, and I put my arms around his neck.
