Chapter 4: The Lounger
"On your back," I said. "Head at the top. Boots off."
Nico lay down on the lounger in the full sun, and the cushion creaked.
It was Tuesday, June 23, ten past ten, 110 on the patio thermometer.
I had told him last week what I meant to do, in front of the neighbor.
He had come at 9:40 exactly with his ears already red.
He looked up at me now with one arm behind his head.
"Are we really doing this outside?" he said.
"Are you really asking?" I said.
"I'm saying it's a lot of sun."
"Then close your eyes."
He closed them.
I stood over him with a foot on either side of his chest, in a sundress with nothing under it.
The whole yard was white and loud with cicadas.
I took the dress by the hem and pulled it over my head.
His eyes opened anyway.
I watched him look up my body from below, from my knees to my thighs to the place between them.
I watched his chest start to heave.
"Look at that," I said. "That's what you get."
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
"You don't get to touch until I say," I said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Hands on the frame."
He gripped the metal rails on either side of his head, and his knuckles went pale.
I did not lower myself yet.
I stood over his face and made him wait, with my knees bent a few inches above his mouth.
"Kiss me first," I said. "Inside my thighs. One, then the other. Don't touch anything else."
He lifted his head and kissed the inside of my right thigh, soft, with his lips parted.
I felt his breath on the place he wasn't allowed to touch.
He kissed the left.
He kissed higher on the right.
By the fourth kiss my legs were shaking so hard I could barely hold the pose.
"Joelle," he whispered.
"Not yet," I said.
I put my knees on the cushion on either side of his ears.
My hands on the headrest above him, and I hovered.
My thighs were trembling, and I realized I was nervous.
I had never done this with anyone.
My ex-husband said it was something women did in movies.
"I'm going to sit on your face," I said, and my voice came out thin.
"And you're going to eat me until I'm finished. Do you understand?"
Nico looked up the length of me and said, "Please."
That was all.
That one word undid every nerve I had.
I let my weight down.
His mouth was hot and open and ready.
It closed on me, and I gasped out loud in the sun.
"Oh," I said. "Oh, God."
He groaned, and the sound went straight into me, and I felt it through my hips.
His tongue started slow.
One broad stroke, then another, and his breath was hot on my skin.
I rocked forward and back, just an inch, and his mouth followed.
"Good," I said. "Good. Don't stop that."
