Chapter 14: The Locket
Lord Hask let the silence sit until it hurt, and then he handed my knife back.
"A week in a stranger's bed will do that to a girl's wrist," he said.
"Sleep, Highness.
"The court meets at noon, and your father wishes to be seen forgiving you."
He took my brother's hand and led him out, and the boy looked back over his shoulder the entire length of the cellar.
I waited until their steps faded on the stair.
Then I put my palm against the wall, because the floor had started to tilt.
He had seen something.
He did not know what, and that was the only reason I was still breathing.
In my old chamber somebody had lit the fire and turned down the bed.
Everything was where I had left it, the hairbrush, the prayer book, the window that looked over the courtyard to the north tower.
I locked the door and sat on the floor with my back against it.
Then I took off the locket.
