Chapter 20: Lake Ice
I did not remember climbing the roof, only the tiles breaking under my boots.
Auren put his wing down for me before I called, and I threw myself along the scales.
"The eastern road," I said.
"Fly."
He rose off the rooftops so hard that my braid whipped across my face.
Below us the square shrank to a ring of torches, with my mother's grey figure standing in it and Marit's copper wings circling above.
Marit had seen the riders too.
She peeled away and dropped toward my mother, and I understood she was staying to guard her.
"They will cross the lake," Auren said, under the wind.
"It is the shortest road to the pass, and the ice is thick enough for horses."
"To the Ashmarch?"
"Hask has no friends in Carrow now.
"He's running to someone."
The lake lay a few miles beyond the city walls, a pale sheet under the sliver of moon, white and still.
Two dark specks crossed it, side by side, small as seeds.
