Chapter 13: Eight Months
I didn't say it.
I didn't say anything at all.
I sat on the stool with my own wedding-day handwriting under my fingers and looked at my husband.
He looked back and let me.
At the far end of the bar, the bartender found something very urgent to do with a lime.
"How long?" I said.
"Since February."
"How?"
He turned his glass a quarter turn on the wood.
"You left your laptop open on the kitchen table at two in the morning. You'd written a letter to nobody, about a husband who never looks at you when you talk." He kept his eyes on mine. "I read it standing up in the dark. Then I went to my study, made an account and answered it."
"You read my letter."
"Yes."
"And then you kept reading them."
"Every one. Most of them twice."
My face went hot, and then cold.
I had told that man things I'd never said out loud in my life.
What my mother's hands smelled like in the hospital.
What I wanted in bed and was too shy to ask for.
That I lay awake hating the sound of the study door.
