Chapter 16: The Next Table
Theresa didn't flinch.
She folded her hands on the table and looked at Eliot with something close to pity.
"The laptop was logged into evidence by the IT office," she said. "I signed for it. I never opened it."
"Then the IT office will say so," said the department chair.
Everyone turned to look at him.
He looked surprised at himself.
Then he took out his phone, set it in the middle of the long table, and dialed.
"I'm putting this on speaker," he said. "I'd like everyone to hear the same thing at the same time. It saves a great deal of email."
Somebody near the window actually laughed.
The IT director answered on the third ring.
The chair explained in two sentences.
There was the sound of typing on the other end.
Theresa sat perfectly still, her pearls catching the light.
"The device was signed out to the associate dean at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday," the IT director said. "It was unlocked at 11:48 that night with the associate dean's own credentials. A folder of messages was copied to an external drive at 11:53. The email to the faculty list went out at 5:58 the next morning from the same office account."
