Chapter 21: What's Left of Her
Theresa Danforth came into the café at eleven the next morning, when every table was full.
I almost didn't know her.
She wore no pearls.
Her blonde bob was pushed behind her ears, and her camel coat was buttoned one hole wrong all the way down.
The room noticed her one table at a time.
The boy who'd filmed her in October was at the window table again.
He picked up his phone.
Faye came out of the back with a tray of cinnamon buns and stopped dead.
"No," she said. "Absolutely not. Out."
"I'd like five minutes," Theresa said. "With Mrs. Thaxter."
It was my own line from the gala.
She knew it was.
I put down the piping bag.
"You can have them here," I said.
Theresa looked around at the tables, at the students, at Tori frozen behind the espresso machine.
Then she seemed to decide she had nothing left to lose in front of anyone.
She took a small silver drive out of her coat pocket and set it on the glass of the pastry case.
"Every letter," she said. "Every copy I made. There aren't any others. The police are coming to my house tomorrow about the phone and the scholarship office. The university's lawyers called at seven."
