Chapter 22: The Waitress
Nobody said anything for a moment.
A dozen women in good wool coats stood among the six tables, and the regulars looked at them.
Faye put Tori down.
"If this is a book club," she said, "we're full."
The woman in black velvet laughed.
The wife in the navy coat didn't.
She stepped up to the pastry case, and I saw that her hands were tight around the strap of her bag.
"We'd like to order desserts," she said. "For the department holiday party. It's at my house on Tuesday. Forty people."
I waited.
She looked at the glass, then at me.
"I sent back your crème brûlée once," she said. "At the club. I said the sugar was too assertive."
"I remember."
"It wasn't." She swallowed. "I'd just been told my husband was up for a chair that he didn't get, and I wanted to send something back. You were the nearest thing."
Faye made a small, interested sound behind me.
"I'd like forty of them," the wife said. "As assertive as you like."
