Chapter 8: Associate Dean

The dean's office was on the second floor of the administration building, behind a glass door with gold letters on it.

Theresa's assistant was a young man in a cardigan who stood up when I came in.

"Do you have an appointment?"

"I have pastries." I held up the white box. "Is she in?"

"She's... Mrs. Thaxter, I really can't."

"It's fine." Theresa's voice came through the half-open inner door. "Let her in, it's a free country."

The assistant sat back down slowly.

He didn't close the door behind me.

I noticed that.

Theresa's office was all white.

White couch, white orchid, a white desk with nothing on it but a laptop and a pen lying exactly parallel to the edge.

She didn't get up.

"Sylvie. You brought me breakfast."

"I brought you morning buns." I set the box on the white desk. "Tori Ingram ate most of the batch on Saturday night. In my café. After you threw her out of her room."

"I didn't throw anyone out. Residential life follows the scholarship office's rules."

"You called her yourself."

"I call a lot of students."

I opened my bag and took out three sheets of paper.

I'd printed them at the café at six that morning, while Tori folded pastry boxes beside me and didn't say a word.

I laid them on top of the bakery box, one by one, facing her.

Theresa glanced down.

She didn't pick them up.

"What's this?"

"Somebody coaching a failing student to record my husband." I tapped the middle page. "I think that number is yours. I want to know why you used a twenty-one-year-old to do it."
