Chapter 12: I Know

The pep rally was at seven on Friday, under the stadium lights, and five thousand students came.

I stood at the back of the student section with Dani, in my gray hood.

I had a speech in my head.

I had written it four times on the walk over.

Gage, I'm the one who writes SnapCount. I'm sorry. Let me tell you why.

The band played. The cheerleaders threw a girl in the air.

On the field, a stage had been set up at the forty-yard line.

It had a microphone and a huge screen behind it.

The whole team stood on it in black jerseys.

Gage was at the end of the line, number 7, with his hands behind his back.

He looked up into the stands and I knew he was looking for me.

I lifted a hand.

He saw it and smiled.

In the front row sat Dale Sullivan in his camel coat, with his arms crossed.

"I can't do it in front of everyone," I said to Dani. "I'll wait until after."

"You can't wait much longer," Dani said. "Look who's got the mic."

Brecken Truitt stood at the front of the stage, grinning, with the microphone in his hand.

"Valor State!" he shouted.

Five thousand people roared.

"Before we get to the game, I want to say something about our quarterback. About the best friend I've ever had."

The crowd cheered again, and Gage ducked his head.
