Chapter 17: How I Win
The scout ordered for the whole table before anyone had opened a menu.
We sat in a private room at the back of a Chicago steakhouse, with white tablecloths and a wall of wine.
I was in the only dress I owned, the black one from Dani's cousin's wedding.
Gage sat on my right with his hand resting on my knee under the cloth.
Across from us were the scout, who was gray and tired, and an agent in a very shiny suit.
At the end of the table sat Dale, with his big watch and his big laugh, smiling at me without his eyes.
"The adjustment against Lakeshore," the scout said to Gage. "Nobody on your staff drew that up. I asked."
"Hallie did," Gage said.
"The SnapCount girl." The scout looked at me properly for the first time. "I've been reading that account for a year. It's better than some of our own film."
"Thank you," I said.
"Do you plan to keep writing?"
"I retired it."
"Pity."
The agent leaned forward with a smile.
"Not necessarily. A quarterback with his own analyst is a story. Tutor to girlfriend to secret weapon. I could sell that in my sleep."
My hand went still on my fork.
Gage said, "Let's not do this at dinner."
"It's exactly what we're here for," said the agent.
"We'll talk later."
It was nothing.
It was a man saying later, because he wanted to eat.
I excused myself and went to find the restroom.
Dale was waiting in the hall beside the coat check.
He had followed me with a glass of whiskey in his hand and no smile at all.
