Chapter 18: Live on Air
Gage's POV
I found my father at the bar of the hotel next door, with his phone out and a smile on.
I had left the scout in the middle of a sentence.
The agent was still calling my name.
"What did you say to her?" I asked.
Dad turned on his stool.
"Sit down, son. You made a scene in there."
"What did you say to Hallie?"
"The truth."
"Which part?"
"That you said it." He sipped. "'She's how I win.' In my own kitchen, in front of me. I was only repeating you."
I hadn't breathed in a while.
"Last Sunday you asked me if I cared about her or if I needed her," I said. "I told you she's how I win. I meant she's the only reason I've won a game since October."
"That's not what it sounds like."
"It's what it was. You took it to her in a hallway and cut it down to a quote."
"She needed to hear it."
"She needed to hear it from you? So that I'd look like what you wanted me to be?"
He shrugged, and that was the answer.
He had done this my whole life.
He had told me what the coaches said, what the girls thought, what the scouts wanted, and I had believed all of it because it came with his arm around me.
"The photo on her door," I said slowly. "It came from your number."
"I get tips."
"From who?"
"I protect my sources."
"Brecken."
His face didn't move, and that was enough.
"You paid a teammate to follow my girlfriend and photograph her step."
"I paid nobody. A friend of the family is looking out for you."
"Here is what happens now," I said.
I said it loudly enough that the bartender stopped wiping a glass.
