Chapter 20: Six in the Morning

Brecken stopped inside the door and looked at forty men looking at him.

"Morning," he said. "What's the occasion?"

"Coffee's on the house," I said. "Sit, Brecken."

"I'm kind of in a rush."

"Sit," said the left tackle, from the counter.

Brecken sat on the nearest stool.

Dani came out of the kitchen and set a phone in front of him, face up, with a photograph of my front door on the screen.

"Funny thing," she said. "This came to a freshman on your team."

"I don't know what that is."

"It's your AirDrop. It says BRECKEN'S IPHONE across the top."

"Anyone can name a phone that."

"Five fifty-two in the morning, a parking lot across from Hallie's building." Dani folded her arms. "Where do you park, Brecken? Do you park on Elm?"

He laughed, and the laugh was a little too bright.

"It was a prank. I sent it to Gage's dad as a joke."

"As a joke," I said.

"That's all it was."

"And the grade-bump text thread? Was that a joke too?"

A guard with a buzz cut stood up in the third booth, very pale, and held up his phone.

"You sent me that one at nine," he said. "You wrote, found these on her laptop, lol."

Brecken's smile finally broke.

"Okay. Okay, listen. Everybody knows she wrote about Gage for two years and slept with him. I told the truth about that part."

"You told the truth with a photo of her bedroom door," said the left tackle. "And you lied about the rest."

"I was doing the team a favor."

"By faking evidence against a girl who charted our offense for free?"
