Chapter 6: Pie at Her Station
I did not sleep that night.
At the diner the next afternoon I wiped the same counter three times.
The lunch rush came in at one, and with it came half the football team, loud and hungry after practice.
Gage was in the middle of them.
He walked straight past the booths and sat on the stool at the end of my section.
His roommate sat beside him. The left tackle was the biggest human I had ever seen, and he was reading the menu with great care.
Brecken took the stool at the far end and lifted two fingers at me.
I poured Gage's coffee with a hand I was proud of.
"Pie," he said. "Whatever you'd eat."
"It's cherry."
"Then cherry."
I cut it and set it down.
He picked up his fork and didn't use it.
"Hallie."
"Yes?"
"Lean in a little. I want to tell you something, and I don't want to shout it."
I leaned on the counter.
He kept his eyes on his plate and his voice very low and very even.
"I didn't sleep either," he said. "I kept thinking about that sweater."
My face went warm.
"I kept thinking about what's under it, and how long it'd take me to get it off you if I did it slowly. Longer than you'd like. I'd make sure of that."
The coffee pot was in my hand.
"I thought about your mouth, and where else it could be," Gage said, in the voice he used to call a play.
"I want to find out what sound you make when I put mine between your thighs."
The pot tipped.
Coffee ran over the lip of his cup, across the saucer and down the counter.
