Chapter 18: The Price of a Wedding
I called Clyde from the pantry, between the sacks of rice and the coffee.
It rang six times.
When he answered, I could hear wind and cattle.
"Mama told you," he said.
"Mama told me."
"I asked her not to."
"She said so. In writing."
He laughed, low and tired, and then he didn't say anything.
I could see him without trying. The gray hat. The pickup with the odd door. The windmill turning behind him.
"I'm not calling to pay your note," I said.
"Good."
"I'm calling to buy bulls."
The wind blew across the phone.
"You told me once I could buy straight," I said. "From you and your neighbors. Pay fair and still save a million dollars. Did you mean it?"
"I meant it."
"Then I want two hundred head of registered Brahman bulls at forty-five hundred a head. Paid by the Crown, straight to whoever raised them. No Strother. No middleman."
"That's nine hundred thousand dollars."
"I can multiply, Clyde."
