Chapter 24: Forgives No One
The house on Beach Street had a blue door and a kitchen window that looked onto the harbor.
Anson had gone to Pearl's old flat on Thursday with a truck and two movers, and he had come back with two things, the yellow table and the lighthouse tea tin.
The yellow table stood in the middle of the new kitchen, sanded where the burglars had gouged it.
Pearl ran her palm along its edge.
"They didn't break the legs," she said. "I told you. A good table doesn't break."
The lighthouse tea tin sat on the shelf above the stove, in its old place.
I set the bear on the counter by the window, where he could see the water.
"He lives here now?" Pearl asked.
"He's visiting."
"Mm." She put her glasses on their cord. "Everything's visiting, with you. Wash your hands."
Anson arrived at five with a pie in a white box, and put it on the table with great ceremony.
"First month's rent," he said.
"It's store bought," said Pearl.
"I was told the terms were one pie."
"Not one pie from a bakery with a French name." She lifted the lid and sniffed. "Apple. It'll do."
He kissed her cheek, and she waved him off, and she was smiling the whole time.
At six there was a knock.
Pearl looked at me, and I wiped my hands on a towel and went to the blue door.
Lila stood on the step in a green sweater, with her hair cut to her shoulders.
She was thin, but her color was better than it had been in eighteen years of Marches.
She held a canvas tote bag against her chest with both hands.
"I'm early," she said. "I didn't want to be late."
