Chapter 14: Chain of Custody

Dalton's office had a glass wall, and I walked through it with a photograph of the courier's form in my hand.

Winslow stayed in the corridor.

I had asked him to.

Brynn sat in the same armchair as before, with a tissue folded in her fist.

Colton stood in front of the desk with his coat still on.

Mr. Livingstone was by the window, his hands behind his back.

"You weren't asked here," said Dalton.

"I was named in it," I said.

"Dalton, she hit me," said Brynn, to the room. "I'm not saying she meant to."

"I did not touch you," I said.

"Colton took my bag by force."

"Colton asked you to open it," I said. "The courier saw it, and so did a woman with a laptop."

Dalton rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"Colton is off the development desk until further notice," he said. "He put hands on a family member in public."

"I took a bag," said Colton. "I took it from her hands, and I handed it back."

"You called me a liar in front of strangers," said Brynn.

"I haven't called you anything yet."

Dalton lifted a hand, and both of them went quiet.

I put my phone face up on his desk.

"Read it," I said.

He looked at the screen.

It was the courier's form, in blue ink, with three signatures and a fourth line left blank.

"Seal cut and re-pressed," Dalton read. "Contents found in a second party's coat. Test void. Incident filed."

"What is this?"

"A report. It's already at the lab."

"Fine. It's a report."

"Dalton," I said. "At dinner, your father told me you wrote a rule for the night auditors' cash bags."

He went still.

"I did," he said.

"He said it was the best rule in the company," said Mr. Livingstone from the window.
