Chapter 16: The Spare Line
The youngest brother turned his laptop around on his knees so I could see the screen.
It showed a column of phone numbers.
"I'm in a data program," he said. "I trace things for fun. Don't tell Dalton."
"Tell me what you traced."
"The photo of you and Winslow came to the group chat from an unknown number. I looked up where the number came from."
He tapped the last line.
"It's one of the eleven lines on the Livingstone Hotels family plan," he said. "Dalton pays the bill. It was opened ten years ago, and nobody has used it since she died."
"Whose line?"
"The night nurse's," said Colton, from the wall.
We all turned.
"Brynn's mother," he said. "She had a phone from the house. It's been charging in the garage flat since she died, and the bill goes out every month."
The youngest nodded.
"And this week it woke up," he said. "Three texts, to the five of us and Dalton's secretary. One photo."
Colton pushed off the wall.
"I have a key to that flat," he said. "I have a key to every door we own."
The garage flat stood behind the Livingstone house, up an outside stair.
Colton unlocked the door at half past ten, and Winslow came up behind us, because I had asked him to.
I do not know what I had expected.
It was one small room with a narrow bed made up with a quilt.
A uniform hung on the back of the door in plastic.
A cheap phone lay on the nightstand, plugged into the wall, with a cracked screen.
Beside it lay a hairbrush, a pair of glasses and a framed picture of a woman with Brynn's chin, holding a baby.
Someone had dusted all of it that week.
