Chapter 15: Fourteen Days
Willa's POV
The courier came at two, while I was holding a terrier's paw over a cup of antiseptic.
Dina signed for the envelope and carried it back to me with both hands.
"It's from the registry," she said. "And it's thick."
I stripped off my gloves and opened it standing at the sink.
The first page was a form.
PETITION FOR RELEASE OF ASSIGNED SPOUSE. Petitioner: Silvan J. Hallam. Respondent: Willa M. Prentiss.
Under it, in a clerk's stamp, that morning's date.
I read the page twice.
I read the line that said I had fourteen days to sign or to refuse.
Then I read his signature, which was thick and slightly crooked, pressed hard into the paper.
"What is it?" Dina said.
"He filed to let me go."
"Silvan did?"
"This morning." My voice sounded very reasonable. "While I was holding a Chihuahua."
"Willa."
"He texted me at seven that it was my call what happens in the year. And an hour later he filed."
"Maybe he..."
"Maybe he got what he wanted, and the first sign of trouble he reached for the exit."
I had said it, so I could hear how it sounded.
It sounded like something I wanted to be true, because that was easier than the other thing.
The phone on the desk rang.
Dina picked it up, listened, and held it out to me with her eyebrows high.
"It's Deborah."
"Child," Deborah said, without hello. "Are you sitting down?"
"No."
"Sit. The registry sent me a copy of the complaint. You have to sleep in this house, or the match is treated as abandoned. I've had the guest room made up since noon."
"I can't go back there."
"You can, and I'll tell you why. He isn't here."
