Chapter 13: The Good Hall

Levi drove me to Ashgrove Lane at eight and parked at the far end of the street.

"I won't come in," he said.

"Good."

"Take your phone."

I took it. That was as much help as I could stand before breakfast.

Bree opened the front door in a gray sweatshirt with her hair pulled back and no makeup on.

She looked at me and didn't say anything, and I didn't either.

The glass had been swept from the entrance hall. My house key was still on the hall table, on the tray where I had left it.

Lorna stood under the brass chandelier in a navy dress and pearls, with her nails done.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"You said you'd tell me why."

"Sit down, Cora."

"I'll stand."

She folded her hands in front of her.

"Danny was born at two in the afternoon. His lungs never opened properly. At eleven that night he stopped."

Her voice didn't shake. That was the worst of it.

"I held him until the doctor wrote the time. Then they wanted to give me a sedative and send me home to an empty crib, and I couldn't put my son in a drawer in the basement."

"So you carried him down the hall."

"To the nursery at the end of the ward. There was a baby in a glass box, five pounds, all alone, and the alarm was off. Her mouth was blue."
