Chapter 21: Across the Table

Levi's POV

The county jail's visiting room had one table bolted to the floor and a window in the door.

Margaret had asked the guard for no lawyers and no cameras, and he had given her neither.

She had also asked me to stand inside the door.

"Someone I trust," she told him, in a tone I have never been able to refuse.

Lorna Moynihan was already seated when we came in.

She wore a washed-out gray sweatshirt, and her wrists were bare.

She looked up at Margaret, and then at me, and her mouth moved in something that was almost a smile.

"Mr. Rhodes," she said. "The man who gets things done."

"Mrs. Moynihan."

"I'm told I won't be called that much longer."

Margaret sat across from her and put her handbag on the floor.

She folded her hands on the table. I saw her bent finger press white against the other.

"You asked for this," Margaret said. "Go on."

Lorna looked at the table.

"I've practiced this speech a good many nights. It doesn't sound right now that you're sitting there."

"Then say it badly."

A door banged somewhere down the corridor.

"I held your hand," Lorna said. "That night. Do you remember?"

"I remember a nurse with a kind face. She said, I'm so sorry, Mrs. Hartwell."

"Yes."

"I thanked her."

Lorna shut her eyes.

"I said, thank you for staying with me," Margaret said. "I said it twice. And you already had my daughter."
