Chapter 17: Where I Want You
"Ten days," Demelza said.
"Yes."
"You sat next to me in Nan's kitchen and watched me eat soup, knowing it."
"I didn't know. I thought."
"You thought, and you decided I couldn't carry it."
He flinched.
"That's what they did," she said. "Daphne with her blue cup. Hoyt with his letters. Somebody else decided what I was strong enough to hear, and I was cold and tired for a year."
"I was afraid you'd think I was the same as him." His voice was raw. "A man who knew something about your strength and kept it. And I was right to be afraid, because that's exactly what I did."
"Why?"
"Because every day I stayed quiet was another day you let me near you." He said it plainly. "I'm not proud of it."
She got out of the bed.
She dressed with her back to him, and her hands were glowing silver at the cuffs.
"Get out of my room, Rafe."
He stood.
"I'm going to fix it."
"You can't fix it by being sorry in here."
"I know."
He took his coat from the hook and went down the stairs, and she heard the door shut hard enough to rattle the tarp on the roof.
The Gathering ground at Pittsfield was a wide grass bowl with a ring of old standing stones at the bottom.
By late afternoon, the slopes were full.
Eleven packs had come from three states, with their Alphas in front and their families on blankets behind, and the smell of smoke and wolves hung over everything.
The Brocklehurst pack stood in a block on the north slope.
One hundred and six wolves, and every one of them was facing Demelza.
